I’m a picture person.

I’ve always been drawn to things visual.
At school I excelled in art, and enjoyed it enough to take an extra subject, textile design, where I not only came first, but discovered my love for design. Then, after travelling for five years to see the world, I returned to Cape Town to study Graphic Design at the AAA School of Advertising. My passion was undiluted and I finished the course as the top student.

I got my first design job in 2000 and over the next few years I worked at big global agencies as well as small boutique studios, designing for large corporate clients as well as one-person businesses. In 2006 I left Cape Town and have since worked from my (not so new) home town of Plettenberg Bay.

I have been fortunate to have received briefs that are constantly challenging and refreshingly varied. Drawing on different kinds of inspiration and using a variety of tools such as typography, photography, illustration, colour and a strong sense of space, I aim to create clear, conceptual and visually strong designs. I am influenced by people, places and everyday situations, by man-made shapes and natural forms; I look at neutral colours and vivid brights, at textures and light; I’m inspired by contrast and mystery, by life and the ever-changing mix it throws at us. This all finds a way into my work.

From simple and clean to chaotic and busy, my portfolio is diverse and my designs highly versatile. This is a necessity for me because it keeps me energized, and a benefit for my clients because it keeps the work unique.

I work with my clients to understand their objectives and maximise their brand’s potential, adapting my style and tone to match each job’s needs. I am involved throughout the process, from initial concept through to finished artwork and printing, if a client wishes. I commit myself to each project, not just because it’s good business but because I find it hard to detach myself.

Every job or personal project is an adventure; an opportunity to explore, a chance to engage and inspire, to have fun, to fulfil my passion. I am incredibly fortunate to do for a living what I love doing in life.

The ‘Forest Friends Kindergarten’ for 3 to 6 year olds (opening it’s doors in January 2010). Nestled on the edge of the indigenous forest at Khoinania farm in the Crags, it is perfect for parents in surrounding areas needing a closer school option.

The classroom of this kindergarten is a beautiful dome allowing lots of streaming light in through different angled windows. As the 2010 soccer fever creeps upon us the dome, with its replication of a soccer ball, is the new popular structure. ‘Forest Friends’ is proud to be the first educational group in South Africa to make use of a dome as a classroom.

Inside this dome classroom you will find a variety of open-ended wooden and organic toys for imaginative play, wooden table and chairs for individual activities and a thick soft rug for story time and puppet shows. The garden has a jungle gym and other interesting activities for gross motor development. And of course being on the doorstep of a forest allows for daily walks through the enchanting forest to the bubbling stream.

Helen Hansen is the Chief Educator at ‘Forest Friends Kindergarten’. She is qualified in Early Childhood Development (NQF4) and Developmental Psychology. She is also a drama instructor and owns the Kidz Take Over Drama School which runs its’ theatre courses in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Helen has been working with children of all ages since 1996.

Helen says the guiding principle of the kindergarten is that children learn through play. “We give them freedom to try, fail and succeed. We encourage them and celebrate with them! All children possess creative potential. We focus on each individual’s capabilities and let each child learn and discover at his or her own pace. In so doing, learning becomes a positive experience.“

The curriculum of the ‘Forest Friends Kindergarten’ is based on the ideas of Austrian philosopher and scientist Rudolf Steiner whose works emphasise the importance of play for the healthy and holistic development of children. Crafts, baking, pottery, painting, sculpting, singing, dancing, storytelling and gardening are just some of the activities that will take place. Class sizes are small, maximum 12, allowing for individual attention.
